This is live 5-10. I had about $950 in front of me. Most had about 400-1000 in front of them. There are only 3 good players at the table. One person is a new player he is in seat 10 (he has about $700). I had never played with him up until that point. Btw I am friends with the 2 other good players and happen to stake 1.

Ok here is the hand:

I get 9-9 UTG. I limp, there are 6-7 players in the hand. Flop comes 9-J-Q with 2 clubs.

I bet 50 folded to new guy in seat 10, he calls.

Turn was a 5 of clubs. He checks................

What do I do?

1.) My first impression was flush draw. As the players in this game would never fold it and it seems logical given his actions so far. Get the flush and check to the bettor.

2 scenarios............

1.) Assume you bet out $100 and he calls and the river is a K of hearts. He then leads out for $100 on the river...........what do you do and why?

2.) Assume you check behind for flop control, river is a King of hearts and the opponent leads out for $100. What do you do and why?

Which line do you like better and why?

I prefer one since you can't give free cards with such a strong hand. You also have a good redraw even if CRed and will likely stack him when you get there and be able to fold when you do not.

In either circumstance, your hand is dead on the river. Obviously though you would be more likely to call with the first line because you're getting better odds.

Before I start so I don't forget, I raise preflop...

OK, to the hand. You're in a whole world of shit. The best you can hope for is he had a minor aneurysm and is playing a weak two pair type hand. I'd bet the turn $100 and hope to pair the board on the river and not be under a bigger FH or even quads. It's a really awful board for your hand, and I might be tempted to just c/f all the way turn and river. Since he is an unknown though you really can't do that.

Assuming scenario 1.1 I will fold, even though I am getting some great odds. The K just makes our hand even worse.

Am I missing something? Why is this not a bet on the turn? Sure he can have the flush but he could also have any pair, any ten, Ace high...this is live.

In both scenarios though if a K drops off on the river now it sucks and I guess you have to fold.

Well, we have the read that the new guy is `good' (first post) so everything is said in that context.

He also said he was new though and he didn't know him so I don't think just calling the flop bet automatically means you're beat.

Well this deserves a response...........

The new guy was an unknown to me but my friend knew him to be brutal. At the time the hand played out I did not know that.

I played the hand pretty damn weak. Had the king not hit and the board not paired I would have check called for $100. I thought for some reason he hit his flush this time. So I checked and then the river was just the worst card imaginable. I just folded the river. I got more then enough back from this guy a few hands later.

If the guy was not new to the table and I knew him I would have bet the turn and called the river. I have done this many times live. I just had no idea about him so I erred to the cautious route.

BTW I fully realize my first screw up was not raising pre-flop.

I had a response typed up, but I decided to delete and go back and read the response of those who are more skilled in the upper limits of this game.
