Tunica!

In a totally last minute impulsive way, I got to go play at Tunica last night.

As you may remember, I'm in Memphis on business. There is a guy who takes me out to dinner. During the evening, I innocently asked who runs the local poker game (i.e. at their company) half joking. There are billboards to several Tunica casinos in Memphis. He tells me there are a few people who play, says there are some casinos nearby (I think he didn't realize quite how far they were (about an hour away)). He seems interested in taking a trip there. I say that would be cool. After dinner and some downtown music, we decide to go, leaving Memphis around 10pm.

We make the trip, and end up at the Horseshoe. He thinks he might like to play blackjack. On the way over, I explained a few things about Hold'em to him (he's never played before). We look around, and I have to tell him that the table poker games are not real poker

. I have to ask a dealer where the poker room is, and it is down at the end. There are about 6-8 tables runnning I think. I asked what is running, and there are three games: stud, 4/8 LHE, and 1/3 NLHE. I chosse 1/3 NLHE, and get a seat right away

I got $400 from the atm, and convert it all into chips. not being sure how much I can sit down with. I see lots of bigs stacks, but just put 280 on the table. I had 300 in red $5 chips, and 100 in white $1 chips. I get dealt in right away without posting. cool. The guy who is with me sits behind me and watches.

It doesn't start out too well as I fold a bunch, and get into a limped pot with 97s (not sure about the position). Flop 7Q7. I think I CR, and get pushed on by a short stack who I call, so I've put about $50 in the pot. Cards are dealt out, and he flips over A7... oh well.

I was introduced to something new at the poker table... the Mississippi straddle! You can straddle from any position at the table!! Pre flop betting then starts to the guy on the left of the straddle. So it is mostly done on the button giving you position on every street.

After a while, my client wants to try it out too. There is a free seat at the table, and he buys in short for $100. The first time he is dealt cards, he picks them up off the table (like draw on tv). The dealer has a fit

He learns quickly tho. The next hand, the live straddle is on and he calls $6 from EP. It's limped around to the straddle who makes it like $40 total. My guy cold calls (basically 1/2 his stack and I'm cringing already!) and gets HU with the button. flop is A high, and my guy bets $10 lol. button calls giving him a funny look. turn is a blank, and my guy bets $5 lol. button mucks! I think he had jj-kk and just knew that the newbie played Ax

too funny.

I played until about 1:30am, and left up $230

I got AA, QQ, AK, AQ, AJ, 88, 33. I basically played a good positional and patient game.

I flop 3 sets (AA, QQ, 33)

I'll write some hands down later.

anyway, it was a blast

A chance I might go back tonight. We'll see what the night brings. My client said he dreamt about poker lol.

Sounds like fun. I personally liked the poker rooms at Sam's Town and the Grand. Don't think we played at the Horseshoe when we were there.

lol, I played the only no limit game they had

I didn't really expect to be able to make it to a casino during my trip, so no plans for meetings were made.

I missed seeing a crazy guy lick his chips....

Seriously though if you are there for some time or are passing through maybe you can meet up with others for some beers or whatever?? Prop bet

I got a serious lol from this, nice TR! Good job flopping sets btw, I have yet to master that aspect playing live.

Hands:

not in any specific order

limp 33 in EP about 4 callers.

flop 36Q. I check, one guy bets out 20, and is called. I raise it up to 80, initial bettor folds, caller thinks for a while, and just calls.
I have about 230 behind, and he has a few $100 bills under his chips. I seem to remember he checks the turn, so maybe i was in MP actually.
Since he called the 80 on a non drawy board, I think he might have a hand he likes, and think for a bit and the shove hoping to get called.
He thinks for a bit and mucks. I drag a nice pot.

AA, raise to $10, one caller. flop A72 all clubs. I bet $15, and take it down.

QQ, limper before me, raise to $12, he calls. flop AQx all diamonds. limper bets 15, i call. turn another diamond.
limper bets 15, i call. river blank. limper bets 10, i call. he has AKo with no diamonds.

AK, raise to 10, 2 callers, flop K high, bet 15 and take it down.

AQo, raise to 11 end up 3 way with me in the middle. flop KTx with 2 clubs. checked to me, i bet 20, both call.
turn is a club which i don't like since last to act was an old guy who i could put on the flush draw. turn checked around.
river is a J giving me broadway but with still 3 clubs on the board. checked to me, i grab some chips as if to bet, but finally check.
it gets checked down. one guy had a lower straight and i don't know what the old guy had. Another pot for the hero

The last hand, I had 88 OTB. Straddle guy had limped, and I raise to 12. He calls and we are HU. flop is QT3. he checks, i cbet 15. he calls. turn is a blank. he checks. i check behind. river also a blank. he bets out 25. I think for a bit. I know that I basically induced his bet, so I have to call. There is a missed flush draw on the board too. I do call, and he had nothing.

Great story! haha! After this initiation and his subsequent trips which are sure to come I hope your client has enough left to pay you next month!
