Default Time Limit On Live Play

Sorry if I'm flooding the forum with WV poker talk. I'm just fucking giddy about live poker being an hour away. But I have a question for you guys who get to play live poker on a regular basis.

I'm concerned with going after work. I'd probably get there around 6 PM and would think I'd have to leave no later than 9 to get home and get ready for work the next day (I get up early). So, at the most, 3 hours of play. I hate to put myself on a time limit when I play poker. I have noticed before that I sometimes play hands I shouldn't because I know I have to leave soon.

So, my question is...what do you live guys do (Eruu doesn't have to answer since his live game lasts about, oh, 325 hours)? How long do you play during the week or do you just go on the weekends so you don't have to worry about time? Is it just a matter of discipline....play until 9 and just up and leave? Or do you more play it by ear?

I would think the weekend is best. I would think, however, a few hours after work if it's not to far is ok. I am hoping to do that tomorrow actually. I will man our booth at a trade show in Jacksonville. I am supposed to meet a guy there tomorrow and he will show me the booth and then he leaves to go to another show. So I will have the evening to myself. I plan on driving over to the poker room for a few hours and trying my luck.

I too plan on going there after work and on worknights but don't mind the short sessions since I've really been trying to think of poker as one long session. IOW, I don't feel like I have to force a profit into each trip if the cards don't come. If the table is really amazing then I'll just have to suffer a little the next day.

I represent that remark!

I stay as long as I think the game is good which is pretty much until the other players leave by my definition.

Time limits are the way to go Snicks. Set an audible alarm and play until UTG then stand up.

Where I play there are long waiting times, 3 hours won't work unless you register over the phone before you get there. Try that, if you have that facility.

In my opinion 3 hours is cutting it really fine. Unless you have great reads on the general poker playing population, you're not going to be able to do much in three hours. I normally plan to go for 6 hours, weekdays or weekends, it doesn't matter. But at times have gone down there for just four hours, that can work as well. Three hours is a bit short in my opinion, remember the hands are slower live.

Yeah, but if these guys are anything like Niagara you can really size them up in a round or so.

Snickers,

this is something I have been struggling with big time as my time has become stretched. I find myself pushing smaller and smaller edges live because hey, I can only play for 3-4 hrs this month and I need to maximize my edge. Of course this is in fact the exact opposite as I should be waiting for better spots but you can see how the mentality gets started.

Def set a time when you are leaving and get up. Just be ready because it sucks to lose a huge pot to a fish and have to leave but that's going to happen.

I almost always stay until closing time :)

Often there at opening time, cuz otherwise hard to get a seat.

But I only have places with 1-2 tables and opening times of 8-2 weekdays, 8-4 weekends

Thanks for the thoughts, everyone. I think I'm going to have to do like Johnny says and not think about winning and losing sessions...especially since I'll be playing more often. I'm just going to have to go and give it a try one night and see how it goes. The weekend will always be my first option, especially playing all day Saturday into the night.

Unfortunately, Johnny, these guys Sunday weren't like Niagara. I'm about to post my trip report where I talk about this.

BL...I know exactly what you mean and this is why I started the thread. Sundays up in Niagara I'm constantly watching the clock because I have that long drive home and usually end up playing an orbit or two (or three) more than I planned.

Carrera...Both poker rooms near me are open 24/7!
