Day 1 - So the sales(men) people who work for us win a trip to Vegas, which means I get to go to Vegas and pay for it all. We agreed to do this for the salesmen because we all love Vegas but we only have 5 salesmen and we have 11 guys on the trip total. The extras include Juan(from the home game) and Jason(Skybiscuit) who are contractors, Realpoor(aka, techy), My brother (and partner), Eruus_Partner(another partner), and cousin(also partner in another venture). We did this trip last year and everyone had lots of fun. Vegas has something for everyone so as long as your friends know that you'll be spending all of your trip at the poker table it's a great place to vacation.
My list looks confusing. Forum members on this trip include: Realpoor, Eruus_partner, Skybiscuit and ERUU. Our flight leaves at 7:40 AM and we plan to meet at my house at 5 am so we have time to get to the airport. I'm running a half marathon later this month so I can't afford to miss too many days of working out. I know my sleep schedule is going to be all screwed up for the weekend anyhow so I get up at 3:30 am and run two miles before anyone shows up. I feel so badass for doing that. Everyone is a little pissed at me because I booked the flight out of the wrong airport to save money and we have to drive an extra 30 mins to get there (fuck 'em). We board the plane and I grab a seat between Jason and Juan so we can gamble on the way with a deck of cards that we bought at the airport. Juan and Jason get drunk trying to talk me into drinking and Juan (aka, El Banquero), who never makes mistakes, fucks up the score sheet and I end up losing about $65 bucks. Net from B-52 is -$65. So I looked online at all of the tournaments that are running and the best payouts are in the highest buy-in tourneys. I haven't had a drink of alcohol since Jan 1 so I'm thinking maybe I'll take a chance at the $1000 + 80 at the Bellagio where we are staying. We hit the ground and the buffet as soon as we can. The buffet at the Bellagio is always awesome. I'm being healthy so I eat an ass load of smoked salmon, smoked herring, fruit and no booze. I'm planning to go take a nap but I have to walk by the poker room first. They are running satellites to the $1080! 10 man SNG's for $240, top two win seats to the big one. Juan and I cross stake each other and grab seats. I start watching the table. This sober thing is weird, I'm able to pick up on player tendencies pretty quickly. Blinds move pretty fast and I steal a couple pots on the way so that we are 4 handed when I finally get short. This was my first poker of the entire trip so I only remember Wilford Brimley from this table. He was a pretty solid TAG player and he did really well because no one even noticed that he was in the pot most of the time. Folded to me in the SB and I see :Qc: :Tc: . It looks pretty good to me so I shove and WB instacalls and shows :As: :Ks: . Flop is :Qs: :9s: :3d: ; Turn is another spade and I go take a nap. I wake up after the big tourney starts and walk back to the poker room. I ask the floor if any other tournies are running and he says I can still buy in to the big one. Hmmmmm, fuck it. I brought almost half of my live roll so I could do this and I was feeling pretty good about my play so I walk to the cage and shell out the most I've ever paid for a tournament. To be continued . . . . Off for another jog. I'll try to finish day one later.

Wowowow, ballsy Eruu! If you're gonna go, go all out I suppose, you are in Vegas after all. Hell of a gamble, I sure hope it pays off for you! If it doesn't, maybe you'll win it back in ring game profit :P

. . . . Day 1 Continued:
After I pay up I learn that I have to wait for someone to bust before I get a seat. In fact, I have to wait for 4 people to bust because I'm that far back in line. I hang around on the rail waiting and I talk to a cab driver who just bought in over his head too. He's in front of me on the list. I finally get a seat and I play tight. I'm surprised at some of the donkey play early and at my ability to tell the difference between the tourists and the real poker players. I'm feeling pretty good. In level 2 blinds are 50/100, we have 5000 starting stacks I think, maybe more. I fold every hand until I steal blinds once from the cut off with :Kc: :Jd: or something similar. Next orbit, I get :Ad: :Ah: in MP and raise to 4X the BB and get one caller (not a tourist). The pot now has almost 1000, Flop is K high, Villain checks and I throw a 1000 chip into the pot. He takes about 20 seconds to fold. I limp one other time with :7c: :8c: and have to fold when the blind raises it up. I peek at :7d: :7s: in BB, MP limps, LP raises maybe 3X, I call and MP calls. Flop is :9s: :7c: :3h: Yahtzee! I check, MP checks and LP bets 1500. I've decided that I'm going to take a chance and let him have another card because this guy has been very aggressive, double barreling pretty often and the board looked safe unless he had a bigger set. I just call, MP folds. Turn is a blank, I check he pot commits himself and I push. He instacalls with :Jd: :Js: and stands up to leave. River is :Jc: and I am crippled. I post my sb and fold and then I get AKo from the button. One limper to me and I shove. All fold. 3 hands later I get :As: :Ks: again and shove again. SB calls with :6c: :6d: and I'm busto. GG me. I felt pretty good about my play but I didn't last long enough to know so I plan to try to win a seat through a satellite the next day. More on Day 1 later . . .

. . . .Day one conclusion.
I find Juan and walk over to Ceasar's so we can sign up for the 7 PM $150 buy-in. I play 1/2 NL cash for an hour and win about $75. Then I go to play the tourney. I feel like I just got out of the deep end into the kiddie pool. Huge difference in the level of play here. The table is pretty friendly though and it's relaxing to just sit and BS with everyone. One guy to my left was tossing this little "lucky" rubber duck back and forth with his buddy on the other end of the table. Early on I raise Js 9s from the button, Ducky calls from the SB and MP limper calls. Ducky bets out on a 9 high flop, MP folds, and I raise. Ducky pushes . . . . shit! I'm pretty sure I'm good here. He didn't raise and didn't bet out. I suppose could have flopped a set but I'm thinking that I've got him beat because of what I'd seen him show down with earlier. I call and he turns over TT. I suck out another 9 on the river and he curses, spikes the duck into his buddy's chips almost spilling his drink and walks away red faced. The whole table including his buddy laughs a little but most of us give him time to get out of hearing. I think this is the only time I got my money in bad in this tournament. I went on a tear after this and I felt like I had good reads and actually got some good hands for a while too. I busted the old guy on my right. I busted the chick on my left. I was about double the average chip stack by the second break. I don't remember the hand that busted me on this tourney but it'll probably come to me later. I'm 90% sure that it was another suck out but I'd been playing poker for several hours now and I was tired and glad to get to bed. I play some black jack and lose a couple hundred. Poor cash flow for Day 1 but I was proud of my play in both tournaments over all. I'm afraid that the read is more dismal than I felt when it was over. Day 2 in another thread.
