OK, first, the set up:
The Simpsons: Channel 4 apologises for pre-watershed swearing | Media | guardian.co.uk Channel 4 has apologised for an administrative error that led to the broadcast of the word "wankers" in an edition of The Simpsons shown last month at 6pm. The episode, shown on April 15, featured a cameo appearance by the pop group U2 during which one of the band members called his colleagues "wankers". I will play the part of the "typical American". Is wanker that much of a curse word? For example, what would it translate to in American TV (meaning, what word would American TV have to bleep out that's on the same level as wanker) at that time of day? Shit? Asshole? I didn't really think wanker was that bad of a word.

It translates to 'jerk'.
However the literal translation is a wanker is someone who jerks off all day  .
