I wondered if anybody was going to talk about this. I'm not going to hide anything, so if you don't want to know, then DON'T READ ON.
At first, I thought your comment was a quote from elsewhere, as it seems to be the consensus. I believe Elite XC to be the lowest tier or 'AA' club of the organized MMA groups - UFC and Pride would be up at the top with WEC (also acquired by UFC) to be kind of their AAA club (although the Faber/Pulver fight was beyond awesome). As such, you aren't going to get great fighters. Mostly the street brawler types or hoodlums or Baronis of the world. The only thing Elite XC has is the women - Gina put on a good show, except she is going to be dogged by her constant inability to cut weight.
Ok, anyway...I agree Lawler should have been the headliner, but Kimbo is the reason anybody watched. It's the only reason I saw any of other fights (because I didn't realize Gina would be fighting). Thompson was a joke. He's mediocre at best and was put in as a plant/tomato can for Kimbo. Having said that, the tomato can should have won. Kimbo did not tap early - common misconception here is that he tapped on the standing guillotine but it was him giving the ref the thumbs-up sign, not tapping. The Ref *should* have stopped the fight when Thompson was in a dominant position dropping fists and forearms on Kimbo....but CBS couldn't let their golden boy lose so it got stood up and stopped the second that Kimbo had an edge. I don't mind so much the final stoppage of the fight because Thompson was out of it but it would have been nice to see him hit the floor first. The ear is another story - and another reason people think the fight was setup. Any decent fighter drains that thing before the fight. As it was, it made for a good target and a good backup way of getting Kimbo the win.
Either way, Elite XC is horrible except for the women. And MMA was pushed back because of the WWE-style theatrics. And sorry Kimbo - you are not a legitimate MMA fighter. And I will say that to his face -- all I'd have to do is lie down and he'd never hurt me!
Also the recording incident wasn't the worst of it. Lots of people complained about it going over, but be lucky you got any of it. People in California, PA, and others didn't get to see anything as the local CBS affiliates didn't show it (some in favor of telethons).
