Default Any MMA fans

Spoiler about the fights if you haven't watched them.

Did anyone watch the fights they had on CBS this weekend?

Spoiler:
I think they probably set back MMA by a few years with that crap. Since when do you headline a fighter with three fights over a belt holder. Especially aginst a guy like Thompson. It was about ratings, and Kimbo was the reason many people watched I guess. I had recorded the fight since I was out playing poker on Saturday. The guide only had it listed from 12:00am till 2:00am. Being a live event it went over and I didn't see the Kimbo fight until today on Youtube. Thompson can be described as a mediocre fighter at best and he gave Kimbo all he could handle. There are also many people saying that Kimbo tapped but they did not stop it. I had also never seen a fight stopped with a fighter still standing and not being hit. Very strange.

I wondered if anybody was going to talk about this. I'm not going to hide anything, so if you don't want to know, then DON'T READ ON.

At first, I thought your comment was a quote from elsewhere, as it seems to be the consensus. I believe Elite XC to be the lowest tier or 'AA' club of the organized MMA groups - UFC and Pride would be up at the top with WEC (also acquired by UFC) to be kind of their AAA club (although the Faber/Pulver fight was beyond awesome). As such, you aren't going to get great fighters. Mostly the street brawler types or hoodlums or Baronis of the world. The only thing Elite XC has is the women - Gina put on a good show, except she is going to be dogged by her constant inability to cut weight.

Ok, anyway...I agree Lawler should have been the headliner, but Kimbo is the reason anybody watched. It's the only reason I saw any of other fights (because I didn't realize Gina would be fighting). Thompson was a joke. He's mediocre at best and was put in as a plant/tomato can for Kimbo. Having said that, the tomato can should have won. Kimbo did not tap early - common misconception here is that he tapped on the standing guillotine but it was him giving the ref the thumbs-up sign, not tapping. The Ref *should* have stopped the fight when Thompson was in a dominant position dropping fists and forearms on Kimbo....but CBS couldn't let their golden boy lose so it got stood up and stopped the second that Kimbo had an edge. I don't mind so much the final stoppage of the fight because Thompson was out of it but it would have been nice to see him hit the floor first. The ear is another story - and another reason people think the fight was setup. Any decent fighter drains that thing before the fight. As it was, it made for a good target and a good backup way of getting Kimbo the win.

Either way, Elite XC is horrible except for the women. And MMA was pushed back because of the WWE-style theatrics. And sorry Kimbo - you are not a legitimate MMA fighter. And I will say that to his face -- all I'd have to do is lie down and he'd never hurt me!

Also the recording incident wasn't the worst of it. Lots of people complained about it going over, but be lucky you got any of it. People in California, PA, and others didn't get to see anything as the local CBS affiliates didn't show it (some in favor of telethons).

I watched the fight on you Tube as I said, and when I saw the section that everyone says he tapped, I wondered if he had. The ref did not stop it so I assumed it was not a tap and thought nothing more about it until I read some others saying that he did. Right after it occurs Thompson tells the ref he tapped. It may well have been a thumbs up, I couldn't really say. Your right, I kept wondering why it wasn't stopped when Kimbo was pinned and and getting mauled and not doing anything to defend himself. The stoppage was BS in my opinion, Thompson was hurt, but he was still standing, was focused on Kimbo and had his hands up. Kimbo was so tired he could barely move. It couldn't have been the ear, the ref would have had to call in a doctor to make that call.

The Lawler-Steele fight was pretty good. I hated to see it end that way. I didn't understand it. Scott took his 5 minutes said he was ok and wanted to fight, the whole thing was really screwy.

Lawler-Steele? That would be Scott 'Hands of Steel' Smith, and word is he told the doctor twice that he couldn't see (before saying he was ok at the end). I tried to listen to the replay and couldn't make out a few things he said. IF he ever said he can't see, even if later he said he was fine, then the doctor is of course going to stop it.

Sure the Kimbo stoppage was BS a bit. I just said it didn't bother me so much because I thought the dude was out on his feet and really the whole fight was BS to that point anyway so it didn't matter.

Looks like this thread is just you and me.....so did you see Faber v Pulver?

Youtube that bitch...or maybe mmalinker has it. Great fight and a bad one to miss live.

Spoiler:
Pulver gets a groin kick, a poke in the eye, a headbutt, and a viscious pounding and keeps going like nothing happened. Both these dudes are tougher than tough.
