Default Why.....

....am I getting myself into spots where I'm 3-barrel bluffing against unknowns? I never 3-barrel bluff.

One of my biggest holes (actually more of a canyon) when I started, and still is to some degree. Sometimes it seems that whenever you bet, they have it & when they don't, you don't either.

Because you KNOW they don't have good enough to call, but they do anyway.

The one that sticks out most went something like this.

sevens is BTN with
4 folds, MP3 calls, 1 fold
sevens raises to $1.10, MP3 calls
Flop is AhXhXs
MP3 checks
sevens bets, MP3 calls
turn is a blank, MP3 checks, sevens bets, MP3 calls
river is a blank, pot is >$6 at this point, and MP3 has <$5
MP3 checks, sevens bets $5 and MP3 calls with

Every now and then I run into this type of villain. You know the kind: they play TP or a set as if they had a flush draw.

Yeah, he's scared he doesn't have better than you but he doesn't want to reraise to check and see - but he doesn't want to lay down either - so he's just gunna passively call anything.

Just put a note on his name so you know what you're up against later. Hope showing that you bluffed your stack with three barrels will help your meta-game and let you get more action when you have something so you can benefit from this later.

So you didn't have anything and you were trying to bet him off?

Hence, "3-barrel bluff". I put him on a flush draw or lower pair, and did not want some stupid Kh8h to win high card just because I didn't bet the river, when no one in their right mind with a missed flush draw will call the rest of their stack on the river with just K high.

I didn't. If I had a pair at all I would have checked behind. By "lower pair" I meant "under-pair". Sorry for the confusion.

I've recently learned not to expect anyone to fold until I've seen that they are capable of doing so. It has saved me lots of money as a result. I will often test these people with smallish pots where I can get away without showing down the bluff; but until I have seen someone fold, I assume that they don't even have the button on their screen. That said, you're up a level or two from me, but I don't think I plan to change my ways all that much WHEN I get there either.
