Default Can someone tell me how to deal with bad beats???

I'm going crazy over here dealing with these bad beats. I feel like I'm going to get rivered everytime now no matter what the odds. How do you guys do it everyday knowing that you played the hand fine but that fucking river kills you? Ever feel that you got lucky because you lost it on the turn instead of the river? Thats how I feel right now. I can see why I took a few months off of poker.

End of rant. PS someone turn off my doomswitch please!

It seems extremely predominate these days at every level you play. I don't think it was this bad 2 years ago. I like to think of Snickers Tag line : something like this

The better player you become the more bad beats you will endure.

Still doesn't help that sinking feeling you get when you are rivered.

detach yourself from the fact that you are playing with money.

Do you get down on yourself if you lose a game of candy land?

I think I posted this thought once before - a long time ago. Something that helps me:

I actually keep track of the bad beats I put on people. I try to be honest about it. I don't record the specific details, usually just a note that it happened and maybe how bad it was. I keep a notepad next to the computer to do this.

Granted that there will be less of these than the ones that are inflicted on you if you're a good player, but for me, seeing evidence that it does go the other way tends to calm me down some.

I heard Gabe Kaplan (The HSP announcer wannabe poker player), explain to the other HSP announcer when asked how these guys could throw around 100s of 1000s of dollars like it's monopoly money, say something like, "These guys, when they enter the poker room, don't think of the chips as money, they are merely tools of the trade. They are the same guys who would have a hissy fit over being overcharged $0.50 for a cup of coffee at a diner".

I was railbirding a new friend from here a little while ago who was playing $1/2NL, when I AIM'd him and said something like "Holy Shit, I think I'd be a little sick if I just lost a hand like that!". My new friend replied, "meh, it's no big deal as long as you have the bankroll to back it up."

My point is this, yeah it hurts, but if you're truly playing your best poker and are getting beat strictly by the cards, then hang in there and keep depositing and playing your best poker. It WILL turn around in your favor eventually. IF, on the other hand, you're not sure if you're playing your best poker, post some hands on here. You really would be amazed at the holes you'll fill in your game. Not being critical, since I don't I don't know you that well, but you haven't posted one of your cash game hands since July. It's super hard for me to believe that your playing great poker since July and aren't ready for a downpayment on a house or at least a boat! hehe

And lastly, if you don't enough in your bankroll to handle some bad beats in the neighborhood of 2 or 3 buy-ins, then you need to consider moving down until you get you confidence back. Hopefully you're not taking this as harsh criticism. Just tryin' to help.

One thing that really helped me to be able to deal with beats was an article on variance. The part that helped me was a section that talked about losing when you are a clear favorite. In the most common post-flop odds situations where you get it all in (lets say, TPTK vs a flush draw) where you're 66/33 favorite, you are mathematically GUARANTEED to lose a third of the time. That's pretty easy to deal with. But this also applies to hands when you are a 95% favorite (lets say pocket pair vs a lower pocket pair). True you win most of the time. But you are mathematically GUARANTEED to lose some of the time. If you play out 100 hands, and lose 5 of those in a row, or 10, or 20, where you are a 95/5 favorite, would you conclude that online poker is rigged, or would you conclude that you're SUPPOSED to lose sometimes?

This is nice advice, thanks. I think that you're right if you looked at it from the ones that you got your down 3-7 not 0-10. Its like the glass is half full not half empty.

Another good post, thanks. I think that I started to expect to lose hands that I'm favored on and when you get like that then you need to take a break from things for a bit. Go read a book or look at some HH's. Whats bad for me now is that my mind isn't busy while I'm home out of work.
