Default mopeds

With gas prices completely insane now I'm thinking seriously about getting a moped for my daily commute to work. I've found some resources online that claim anywhere from 70-150 mpg for these things. I found some really cheap ones that look pretty good for around $850 online, and they ship it to you and requires a bit of assembly but not too difficult. I also plan to try to hit up a few moped shops around town soon.

I also am looking very hard at the Kawasaki Ninja 250 (Ninja® 250R), which IMO is a really sweet looking bike and gets around 70mp, and it's not too expensive. I even found some local sellers on craigslist selling their Ninjas for around 2500-3K that look *really* nice.

What are your plans for dealing with gas prices? And does anyone by chance already own a moped and can give their thoughts?

I had a hybrid moped/motorbike when I was a kid. It was great... I could do 55 on the highway and it seemed like it never needed to fill up. It was called the Honda MB5. 50cc. I wonder if they still make things like this because it would fit the bill nicely...

Spoiler:

Seriously though, when I lived in Kansas City, I picked up a Honda Shadow 750 which saved me major money on gas. I would never consider buying another 2 wheeler here on Long Island. People are way to inconsiderate of riders. It'd be like rolling the dice each day when I left for work.

Man, mopeds have changed a lot since I was a kid. You can get something like this that gets 60-80 MPG and goes 60 MPH for $1400, that's pretty great. Sure, you'll look like a douche, but who cares? I'd get one if Spammy and I didn't carpool 90% of the time.

yeah the things look a little retarded. that's a big reason i'm looking at the ninja too. Although, if I did get a moped, then it would probably be the cheapest one I could find, which would mean due to it's size it would probably also get like 90 mpg, BUT it would also have a top speed of like 30.

decisions decisions...

Sounds like a good idea to me so long as your commute doesn't seem dangerous for one. Fuck what any random people think about it, you're just trying to get to work.

Ugi - we do have a city bus, but it does take a while to get anywhere. Actually the main problem is that the nearest bus stop is several miles from where we live. We're a little bit off the beaten path as far as the city is concerned, although it doesn't feel like it because we're still in a developed area. San Antonio is a huge, sprawling city.
