How Do You Learn?
People learn in different ways. Some people do better by reading the subject’s material. Others do better in a classroom setting. Some do better by just doing it and learning as they go while others learn best by watching someone else as they explain things to you. And some do better when taught one-on-one. Most learning is probably a combination of all of the above. But I think it’s important to know which way of learning is best for you.
I bring this up because I’ve been playing poker for a few years now and am a break even player at best (important to note that although I’ve been playing for a few years, I don’t have a ton of hands of experience). I’ve read books, I’ve posted hands, I’ve read other posted hands. I read the forums. I’ve asked questions. I’ve read poker magazines. Apparently, this was not working for me as far as learning. Maybe the fault lies with me because maybe I wasn’t taking the teachings seriously enough. Maybe I’ve reached the age where it’s hard for me to learn new things. I mean, I’ve been out of school for a lot longer now than I was in school.
Actually, that view of “I can’t learn now” is kinda wrong. Obviously I’ve learned about poker. You need to know what you’re doing to be a break even player. What I was seeking was getting to the next level. That’s where I am having the trouble in learning. But maybe it’s the way I was trying to learn. About the only ways I haven’t tried to learn about poker was watching training videos and getting one-on-one tutoring.
But this presents a whole new problem. The training video web sites are kinda pricey for a micro-limit player like me. And one-on-one tutoring with a pro is hundreds of dollars an hour. Both could be considered investments against future earnings. But I wasn’t going to shell out outrageous money (to me) in hopes of grasping concepts that are currently escaping me. I don’t have that kind of money to throw around.
So this brings up another option. Tutoring through the Felt Poker tutors. No matter what your bankroll, the Felt Poker tutors will work with you to get the training you need. Check out the Poker Coaching/Tutoring web site for more information. As I write this, Ugi has watched only two of my videos, but he has already altered my game in a good way. Not only that, because I’ve seen improvement already, it’s increased my confidence, which is very important in poker. Before, I might have fired up Poker Stars and hoped I didn’t lose. Now I start up a session ready to go to battle and expecting to win…excited to try out my newly learned skills.
Poker is fun and exciting again. I think I found my best way of learning. You need to find yours. Didn’t mean to make this a long commercial for Felt Poker tutoring. Just wanted to point out that if you’re stuck, it might be a great option for you.
