Taking a Stab at SnG’s…

Well, it’s been a long time since I’ve written a blog entry. Mostly because I took much of the summer off from (trying to be) serious poker. In September I started playing more or less SnG’s exclusively. I started extremely underolled for $5 Buyin SnG’s with $100. Not much, but I hoped it would be enough to see if I could be competitive at these things.

The beginning of the month I went on a tear and thought I was invincible making the bankroll grow to nearly $240. I could do nothing wrong; until that is, I started thinking that I could do nothing wrong.
The second half of the month brought on a huge downswing that I couldn’t shake. Partly bad luck, but mostly bad cocky playing. When I was down to like $20 I thought I’d better cut down to 2 tables (w/HUD) from the 4 tables I had been playing to really concentrate. (I don’t have room for a HUD when I play 4) I ended the month down about $9 but feeling better.

300-400 $5 (with a few $10) SnG’s altogether since I started I’m now back up to over $250 again, and am focused on playing my best.

I’ve just about finished reading Sit ‘n Go Strategy by Collin Moshman and I think it’s a great book.

I think I’ve finally found a type of poker that I can be profitable at. Tonight I hooked up a second monitor to my laptop and tried 8 tables. I did OK, with two 1st’s a 2nd and two 3rd’s, but I think I’d better stick to 4 tables for a while longer.

I’m keeping maticulous records in a spreadsheet on every game and result since I’ve started so it could be some interesting reading if I ever get to move up and make some real money at this.

Wish me luck!

haha vnh, BL! Impressive that you are 8-tabling now. I think you can do well with these, because it sounds like you’ve got the commitment that it will take. good luck!

Not so fast… Thanks for the compliment 7’s, but I said I tried 8-tabling (once). I think I need to stick to 4 at the most for a while. 8 is an awfully big chunk of my bankroll to have out there all at once. I think I’ll post a new blog entry on that subject. ;)

I tried 4 tables for the first time the other day and it definitely takes some time to get used to it. I went down to 2 tables and saw a huge difference. It sure does take a while.
